Best set of the day: Hell yeah, LCD Soundsystem paving the way with a highly energetic hour of rock meets electronica. As the night faded to darkness Daft Punk began a hypnotic adventure from high atop a light-driven triangle. The two men in space suits never removed their helmets and through beats and an unbelievable fast-paced light show controlled our minds for an hour and a half. The dance-field moved to a blend of techno and crowd-pleasing samples, finally turning off the sound and lights and returning the bodies to their proper owners.
The Polyphonic Spree: This 2:30 p.m. set really set the tone for the day as this 23-member act gave an Arcade Fire-like performance with a highly uplifting mix of rock and sprawling vocals with instruments that included horns and a harp. They performed in one-piece black military outfits but made a switch to full white robes for the finale, which included a romp through the large crowd, and a fist-pumping cover of Nirvana's Lithium.
Others sets: The Fratellis, Ghostland Observatory, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Electric Six and The Rapture all delivered as expected.
Surprise set of the day: Satellite Party, Perry Ferrell and his party hasn't changed much, still elaborate and self-indulgent. His show worked for me this time and that just might have been because he added four songs from Jane's Addiction and another from Porno For Pyros. Hard to call them covers, but those were the most exciting songs they performed.
the LCD--->Daft Punk double bill was incredible. Just a surreal, amazing experience.
